Brighton, Uncategorized

The UK’s biggest celebration of Caribbean food is in full flow this August, but if you can’t make it over to the bright lights of Brixton from now until the 29th, stay in Brighton to munch all the Caribbean treats you could ever need; there’s no excuse for not joining in! So grab a slice of the action and prepare to slap some sauce over some real zingers this summer; you ‘butter’ be ready! Here’s the low down of where to go to chow down.

Riki Tik Beach Bar

Many Brighton natives fondly recall early memories of Riki Tik along the North Laine. Famed for its 80 different rums, DJ sets and authentic Caribbean dishes, the colourful pad has relocated to the Brighton seafront, so now everyone can soak up summer vibes while enjoying some rum and reggae; what could be better?  Culinary choices include delicious jerk chicken, goat curry, ackee and saltfish and Caribbean burgers that’ll knock your socks off.

 Jukes Bar and Kitchen

Wander down the seemingly endless Portland Road in Hove to experience this gem near Aldrington Station. Like any good Caribbean hub, the atmosphere at Jukes is relaxed and its soul food packs a punch. ‘In the know’ punters enjoy Jukes’ alternative Sunday buffet lunches, and look forward to regular live music sessions with a slice of homemade rum cake in one hand and a sweet liquor in the other. If only every lazy summer evening could be this good.

 Cummin Up

Restaurant and takeaway hit Cummin Up, along London Road, specialise in no-frills food with deep flavours, tender meat and hearty portion sizes. Eat in and have a good chin wag with the Cummin Up team or order in and fill your home with fantastic flavours; this perky, understated little restaurant will deliver the goods. The only crux is that service can sometimes be a little slow, but good things come to those who wait.

Lickle More Caribbean Kitchen

“Yu shake man han, yu nu shake him heart.”

Forgo your mid-week fridge top-up at Tesco in Hove for some tip-top jerk chicken at the Lickle More Caribbean Kitchen, cheekily located next to the supermarket’s car park. Granted, it’s also next door to the neighbourhood cemetery so the views leave a lot to be desired, but trust us, your taste-buds will thank you for the cheap and cheerful treat!
