July Charity of the Month : FRANK WATER

July’s Charity of the Month is Bristol based charity, FRANK WATER.

In India, 77 million people live without safe water, and 770 million without safe sanitation. This has devastating consequences, especially for young children, women and girls.

Founded in 2005 by award-winning social entrepreneur, Katie Alcott, UK Water Charity FRANK Water has provided safe water and sanitation for more than 325,000 people in 300 communities.

FRANK Water was born after Katie contracted dysentery from drinking dirty water in India. She returned to Bristol, recovered and set about trying to help. Her first business idea was to raise essential funds by selling bottled water, a luxury product in the Western world.

She called it FRANK Water, with the intention of being frank about world water issues and the way she ran the business. She bought a pallet of water from a local spring, labelled it with the FRANK Water brand and approached Bristol’s bars and cafes, one by one, selling them single cases of water until the water was gone and she’d made a small profit. She donated the profits to FRANK Water’s first NGO Partner in India and carried on.

Ten years later, FRANK Water is a social enterprise as well as a registered charity, working with local partners across six different states in India.

FRANK Water works together with carefully selected local partners to reach the most marginalised people living in rural, tribal areas and urban slums. Working with the community every step of the way, we help them to develop holistic, inclusive and sustainable solutions.

If people have access to a safe water supply and toilet their lives can be transformed through better health, improved education and more resilient communities. For every £1 invested in water and sanitation, £4 is generated in increased productivity.

In the UK, FRANK Water continues to raise essential funds through a number of engaging and exciting campaigns, including its refill initiative which encourages consumers away from single use bottles.

For 2016, FRANK Water has teamed up with British fashion legend, Vivienne Westwood to produce a limited edition stainless steel bottle. FRANK’s innovative FreeFill scheme tours the UK every summer, providing chilled, filtered drinking water at UK music festivals.

FRANK Water is still small (the team can still fit around the kitchen table) but it packs a big punch, with dedicated staff and amazing volunteers, trustees and supporters.
